Kizz-A-Me Kate
May 29, 1994
#0134163
We bought Kate as a broodmare prospect. She had never been started under saddle. It didn't take us long to learn that her bold personality and love of going would make her an incredible riding horse. So we started her - this photo was taken on her first ride ever. So far, we have not found a single thing she is afraid of - she will go anywhere and do anything, no questions asked. Kate has more endurance than any horse I have ever seen.

Ms came to us just last year. She is older and we do not know how many more foals she will have, but we love her and she is a pleasure to have around.

Red Range Chamisa
April 21, 1988
AMHA # 0111522
Chestnut, frosted blaze, 2 hind socks, left coronet
Carrie has been an incredible horse for us. I have ridden her extensively; she is a superb dressage horse and performs up to 4th-level maneuvers with ease and grace. She jumps. She is a terrific pack horse and mountain trail riding horse. She does everything. Amazingly athletic, she passes on her wonderful movement and ability to her foals. They are as elegant as she is.

NVS Mi Sonnetta
July 5, 2002
AMHA #159608
Bay, no white markings
Sonnetta came to me in a roundabout way, one of those fascinating coincidences of life where everything just falls into place and we get blessed in a manner we never expected. Sonnetta and I have a bond that is unusual, and very strong. She spent the last 2 seasons as my primary mountain horse, leading pack strings and working on cattle drives. In fact, she stars in a few of the stories in my Articles section on this site. She is small, but a powerhouse of energy and spirit. I love her “I not only can – I WILL do it” attitude, and the fact she is absolutely fearless. At the end of the cattle drive last year, one of the other riders told me that what made the trip for him was watching Sonnetta and me dive right off the edge of the cliffs after cows, and never even hesitate. That IS Sonnetta. I bred her to Chalk Mt Sunny Mac last spring and she foaled a gorgeous smokey black colt. She has taken to the job of motherhood as easily as every job I’ve given her.

Ursula's Higuera Bandita
October 11, 1991
AMHA # 0160959
Chestnut, blaze, left hind fetlock
If you think Ursula resembles Patina - you are right. They are half sisters, both being sired by the incredible Higuera Bandido. Ursula worked hard for us for a few years - until we discovered what an incredible broodmare she is. We'll be lucky if she ever goes back to work full-time as a riding horse. The three foals she has had thus far have been incredible.
Ursula has joined the broodmare herd at Old Growth Morgans and will continue to produce spectacular foals for Wendy LeGate’s wonderful breeding program. |

Lee's Mar-Star
July 13, 1989
AMHA # 0117742
Chocolate chestnut, flaxen mane and tail, star, left hind pastern, right hind coronet
Lee is originally from Arkansas. Our very dear friend, Wendy LeGate, told us about her and it wasn't long before Lee joined our now-growing broodmare herd. Lee has never been trained to ride. She suffered an ugly accident in her pasture years before we bought her, and lost her right eye. However, she took to our halter training and groundwork like the trooper she is - and has proven to be a superb mother. Lee's coloring is very unusual - and striking.

Hideaway Starlight Moon
Aug 5, 1993
AMHA # 0137226
Bay, star
Starlight is the horse who got us started breeding Morgans. Although we rode and packed her for a few years, we ultimately learned that she had apparently suffered a traumatic injury years before, and this old injury was causing her occasional pain. So, the vets we consulted felt she should be kept home and become a broodmare. Well the rest is history. Starlight is our lone mare of non-serious 2WF breeding. Instead, she is a mix of Government, Brunk, Lippitt, 2WF, and old show breeding. An incredibly showey and beautiful mare, her babies have her head and self-carriage.

RiverOak Bay Laurel
June 6, 1994
AMHA # 0133592
Bay, right hind coronet
Bailey is another outstanding riding horse who has proven to be just as exceptional as a broodmare. Although she is like a mountain goat on high country trails, we decided to try crossing her with Josh. The resulting colt has made the decision for us - Bailey will be spending a serious amount of time as a broodmare now.

Triple S Nita
June 13, 1993
AMHA #132970
A stunning, huge palomino of very strong WWF breeding, Nita has been leased to us for a couple of years by her owner, Lynn Brown of Long Beach. Nita had been a broodmare for several years before Lynn purchased her, but had never been ridden. Lynn sent Nita to me and we got her started under saddle, and until Lynn gets her dream ranch Nita may remain here with us. Meanwhile, Nita was bred to Zorro two years ago and foaled a dark chestnut filly, and was bred back the following fall to Chalk Mt Sunny Mac for a late Sept of ’08 foal. Nita has the coolest, most laid-back personality ever and she really loves human contact. She’s truly a joy to be around.
