Morgan Horses – In the Forefront
Welcome to JaF Morgan Stock Horses where the passion is strong for both the Morgan horse and “vaquero-style” California bridle horse training. In fact, JaF stands for “Jaquima a Freno” (pronounced Ha-kee-ma ah Fray-no) which means “Hackamore to Bridle” in Spanish.
In the early California tradition, a true bridle horse refers to a spade bit horse, a horse who is recognized as being “straight-up-in-the-bridle”. While nearly all of the horses sold here are being ridden in the snaffle, by choosing this ranch and prefix name it is my wish to honor the incredible Horsemen who continue the art of building the California bridle horse. I hope to do what I can to breed horses who possess both the aptitude and the conformation to carry on this magnificent style.
Morgans have a long history of being bridle horses. They have the mentality and the physical abilities to do the job – something the history records show as factual in early western America . It is an honor to have the opportunity to bring the Morgan characteristics to the forefront once again via JaF Morgan Stock Horses. While not all of my clients choose to follow the vaquero-style training path, I strive to breed Morgans that are capable of becoming bridle horses. Our horses for sale are solid and ready to go to a new home, and excel in whatever discipline one desires. Indeed, they have the physical, mental, and emotional capabilities not always seen in young horses. The training style with particular attention to foundation basics at JaF Morgan Horses makes this possible.
Bloodlines – At JaF Morgan Stock Horses
The outstanding Foundation-bred Morgan stallion, JaF Sunrise Surfer Dude, son of the magnificent Can Don Joshua Danny, is standing at stud at JaF Morgans. Surfer Dude’s bloodlines go back to Tio Lalo via Californio and Shatona Karzan on the top, and Flyhawk, Jubilee King and Higuera Bandido on the bottom. Words cannot convey the gratitude and admiration that I have for the people who bred the fine horses that are in Surfer’s pedigree. Unquestionably, these proven bloodlines have an incredible history, along with beauty and athletic ability. Surfer is no exception as he has proven to be a talented “working cow horse” as well as a fabulous trail mount. His wonderful, baroque-style conformation makes it easy to visualize him as the Bridle Horse he is becoming.
Surfer Dude is not the only Foundation-bred horse here – many of our broodmares are as well, and all of them are from strong Western Working bloodlines. Surfer has proven himself to be a wonderful sire, and his babies have already excelled far beyond any others I have had the pleasure to work with.

Training Style – Building a Foundation
My specialty is raising and selling well-trained Morgans that have impeccable ground manners, are soft in the halter and in the snaffle bit, and are well exposed to an amazing variety of experiences, situations and stimuli. This training style provides horses with a foundation which will prove beneficial throughout their lives, no matter their eventual discipline. (See “Training” for details).
